Learn Insurance Enrollment Advisor Guide

Introduction to Insurance:

The need for insurance is universal in a free economy.  Without insurance few loans could be made, few homes could be built, transportation systems could come to a halt and credit would dry up. The magic of insurance makes our way of life possible with the simple concept that the many who do not have a loss share the losses of the unfortunate few.  This is called the Law of Large Numbers and is at the core of what makes insurance work.

In the United States insurance is regulated by the individual states and in some cases must meet federal guidelines, for example in Flood Insurance.  This fact makes insurance complex because a company like 360 Training that offers licensing and Continuing Education (CE) must meet the requirements of all 50 states.  The state regulations change frequently and the final authority on state regulations is the individual state Department of Insurance (DOI).

Who does what in the insurance business:

  • Insurance companies or insurance carriers: These are the “manufactures” of the insurance business.  They issue the policies, pay the claims, file the policies with the state and build a distribution system to distribute the product.  Most people who work insurance companies are not licensed and do not need CE unless they sell the product to the public.
    • Direct writing companies mostly sell insurance directly to the public.  This could be with agents, direct mail, phone, internet, etc.  State Farm is an example of a direct writing company. The direct writing companies often pay for insurance training.
    • Independent agent companies generally sell to the public through a network of independent agents.  These agents represent many companies and can choose which company best fits the customer. Hartford and Travelers are examples of large companies who use independent agents.  The independent agent company may pay for some training for top agents but usually training is the expense of the agent.
    • Blended delivery companies can use their own employees or independent agent so sell. GEICO and Progressive are examples. The blended delivery company may pay for training for their direct employees and the independent agent representing this company may pay for their own training.
    • Insurance wholesalers are organizations who offer access to a variety of insurance companies to agents who do not have direct contacts with the companies.  Some of the organizations are very large and write, or sell, Billions of dollars of business. For an example, an agent who wished to place business with Lloyds of London might go to an insurance wholesaler to place a policy of a difficult line, or type of insurance.
  • Insurance Agents:
  • Direct Agents normally sell insurance for just one company which are direct writing companies.  State Farm is an example.
  • Independent agents normally sell insurance for a number of companies, are not employees and pay for their own training.
  • Insurance brokers are insurance sales people who do not represent a company but actually represent the insurance buyer.  The broker goes to companies and seeks to place insurance for their client.  Only a few states actually have licensed brokers.  360 training does not offer Broker License training
  • 360training offers pre-licensing courses for insurance agents in most states.

Insurance Adjusters

  • Insurance adjusters work with policy holders and third party claimants who have suffered a loss.  People buy insurance to have losses settled and when a loss occurs it is the adjuster who help “make people whole” or indemnify them.

Learn Insurance and Financial Services Products

(See www.Learninsurance.com website)

  • Insurance Pre-Licensing is offered for most states. After completing our pre-licensing course the student applies to their respective state Department of Insurance to take the state exam and receive a license. Each state has FAQs for additional information.
    • Life and Health license is for those writing life, health, accident, Medicare supplements and this type of insurance.
    • Property and Casualty licenses allow agents to sell auto, home, business, liability and many other kinds of insurance.
    • Multi-licensed agents may have a variety of insurance licenses. We offer the Life and Health and Property and Casualty license.
  • Texas Adjuster License is our largest selling single product.
    • Around 30 states recognize the TX Adjusters license. 360 has a unique advantage in that students take our online adjuster pre-licensing course and then take the Adjuster Exam online instead of attending a state exam site.
    • The TX Adjuster license is accepted by many states and has an option to have the help of a live instructor for preparation.
  • Insurance Continuing Education (CE) is required for insurance agent to maintain their license.
    • Most states require around 24 hours of CE every 2 years and if the agent holds two or more licenses require 30 hrs of training.
    • Each state has specific requirements for CE credit. Please see the individual state FAQs for information.
  • Professional Designations are often earned by insurance professionals. Many who earn the designations are not licensed insurance agents but may serve in some other capacity in the insurance industry, such as an attorney or CPA.  Please carefully review the designation section of Learn Insurance before answering questions.
  • Securities Pre-Licensing training is offered by 360 and helps students prepare for 11 different kinds of securities exams.  A securities license is necessary to sell stocks, bonds, options, mutual funds and other kinds of financial instruments.  Once a person earns a securities licensed they affiliate with securities firm and become Registered Representatives or other types of financial advisors.
  • Certified Financial Planner (CFP) is a professional designation that is earned by passing exams.  Once the CFP designation is achieved CFP Continuing Education is required. 360 offers study material to earn the CFP designation as well as CFP qualified courses to keep the designation.
  • Certified Public Accountant Continuing Education (CPA CE) is a site for CPAs to earn their CE credits.  For more information and a list of states where 360 is approved please go to www.cpacampus.com.  Current cost is $199 for unlimited CPA CE.  State requirements for training run from 40 to 100 hours of credit.  See the individual state on CPACampus.com website for exact details.

Vertical Description

Insurance CE

- Insurance CE is regulated by the individual State Departments of Insurance. Hour and course requirements are different for every state and must be submitted to the State Department of Insurance or other regulatory bodies for Course Approval. Certificates are available in those states which allow for students to print their own certificates. Reporting is done by both agents and providers according to the different state rules.

Insurance Pre-License

- The Insurance Pre-License courses are much like the Securities & Futures Prep courses, in the fact that they function as examination prep for the state specific Insurance licensing exams.

Some states require approved pre-license courses prior to taking these license exams. Other states require nothing before taking a course. Certificates are available only for those courses which are approved by the state Department of Insurance.

Firm Element CE

- Firm Element CE is regulated by the NASD. NASD Membership and Registration Rule 1120 (b) (the “Rule”) sets forth requirements for industry professionals to participate in a firm sponsored training program. Under the terms of the Rule, each firm is required to conduct a needs analysis annually, then prepare and implement an annual training plan to provide training to all registered persons with direct contact with customers, and the immediate supervisors of those registered individuals. The training must meet minimum standards and focus on the particular investment products and services that each firm offers its customers.

Currently, there are no state requirements for continuing education training of securities professionals beyond the present NASD requirements. Firms which fail to develop sufficient continuing education programs, and or make available to registered employees continuing education programs, and individuals who fail to comply with their firm’s educational program may be subject to fines, suspensions and or expulsion by the NASD for failure to comply with NASD Conduct Rules 2110 and Membership and Registration Rule 1120. A certificate will be available to print online following completion of the course.

Securities & Futures Prep

- These courses function as examination prep for the series licensing exams. In essence, this is pre-licensing coursework, whereas Firm Element CE is continuing education.

Banking Training

- The Banking Training courses are not approved by a regulatory body, nor are they required for any specific designation or license. The courses listed in this section have been chosen for their specific relation to the banking industry. No course completion certificates are available at this time.

Sales and Management Training

- Similar to the Banking Training courses, these are geared towards sales and management professionals. Again, there is no specific hour requirement for any specific designation or license approval. No course completion certificates are available at this time.

Certified Financial Planner CE

- CFP CE is approved through the CFP board. There are over 40,000 CFP approved agents in the United States, and each must renew their license every two years. A completion certificate is available online, and the agent credits must be reported to the CFP Board electronically.

Provider is responsible for reporting.

Top Question Asked by Students for Pre-Licensing Training

1.       What kind of insurance license do I need?

b.      Do you want to sell health, dental, life and medical insurance?  If so, you need a life and health license.

2.      If I take your class am I an agent?

a.       No.  Our insurance licensing courses are pre-licensing courses that prepare you for the state exam.  After you successfully complete our pre-licensing exam you are ready for the state test.

3.      After I get my license can I start right away selling insurance?

a.       Yes.  You need to get a contract with a company or companies to represent and sell their products.

4.      In general, can you tell me what kinds of agents are out there?

a.       There are agents who only sell for one company.  These can be called direct writers, exclusive agents or direct agents.  These agents may or may not be employees of an insurance company but the general idea is that they sell for only one company.
b.      Independent agents sell for more than one company and may have many choices of products.

5.      How do I sign up with a company?

a.       We suggest you check with the insurance trade journals, job placement services, bulletin boards, etc.  Already having an agent’s licensed will move you to the “head of the line” over those who do not have a license.

6.      Do I have to take a pre-licensing course?

a.       In some states a pre-licensing course is not required and in fact you can sign up for the test without going to class.  There is cost and time associated with taking the licensing exam and without study the chances of passing are slim.  Some of our most appreciative clients are those students who have flunked the first time and then take our pre-license course to prepare and then are successful.

15.  What is different about your adjuster pre-licensing class than from the competition?

a.       If you take our course you take the actual adjuster test online and do not have to take the state administered exam.

16.  Is the adjuster test an open book exam?

a.       No.  The test must be monitored.

17.  After I take your class will I know all about how to adjust claims?
